Your scenic tour begins through the Sumail Gap and across the desert plains through the townships of Bidbid, Al Qabil and Ibra - gateway to the SharqiyaRegion. Many watchtowers on the surrounding hills pay silent tribute to Ibra's past strategic importnace; we stop here to wander around old merchants homes of the rich, some of the best examples in Oman today. Remains of grand fortified houses and forts abound.
Not far way is Al Mudayrib, where the surrounding hills are dotted with yet more watchtowers and a wonderful opportunity to see the old teak wooden doors that call for attention in the old crumbling streets and alleyways.
The journey continues to the Wahiba Sands, a romantic desert with rolling sand dunes, varying from deep red to rich honey colour, stretching as far as the eye can see. This is the traditional home of the Bedouin, hardy spirited people who know how to survive in these harsh desert conditions.
